How To Tell if You Have Cool, Warm Or Neutral Undertones

Have you ever tried on a top or a shade of lipstick that makes your skin, eyes and face pop? But then test out something in a similar shade in clothing/makeup, and it makes you look tired, washed-out and just not good?

Well, there’s a reason for that, and it probably has to do with your undertone and not knowing what looks good with it. Because knowing your undertone (which is under your skins surface) is very vital, and can possibly make or break an outfit, a makeup look, etc, since your skin tone is what balances and enhances certain things out.

Your undertone can typically range from being neutral with a slight grey look, to a cool complexion with hints and hues of dusty pinks, purples and blue shades, or, you can have more warm undertones that radiant colors like yellow, peach or gold, that make you look a little more sun-kissed.

Finding your undertones will always change depending on your unique self, and is never locked to just one nationality/race. Undertones will sometimes change depending on your ethnic background, but will mainly vary on what your DNA decides to pull from.

So in other words, just because your fair-skinned doesn’t mean you’re instantly cool-toned, and just because you’re darker-skinned doesn’t mean you’re instantly warm-toned, because as you can see up above in the pictures…it just depends!

But anyway, that’s why today, I’ll be sharing five handy tricks to make it a lot easier for you to figure out what category you fit between — no matter what your race or skin tone is!

Check your veins

So one of the first, and easiest things you can do to find out if you’re cool, warm or neutral toned, is to check your veins. All you have to do is push your sleeves up, and look at the veins on the inside of your wrist, and find out if they’re more blue or green. If they look more blue you’re likely to have cool undertones. If the veins look green, you’re warm, since you’re seeing them through a yellow-ish warm skin tone that turns your blue veins green (because you know, yellow + blue = green). And of course if your veins seem in-between…you’re neutral.

Eye and hair color

Your natural eye and hair color can help figure out your coloring too, which is pretty cool, right? Because you can just look in the mirror and figure things out. So cool undertone individuals have eyes that are blue, gray or green, and have blond, brown or black hair with blue, silver, violet or ash undertones. And warmer-toned people, usually have brown, amber or hazel eyes with strawberry blond, red, brown or black hair. Their hair tends to have gold, red, orange or yellow undertones, and therefore causes them to have a slight flushed pigmentation. Neutral people will normally have a mix, and will have blondish-brown hair or really dark brown hair.

How do you tan?

This one is also a really cool trick, because you literally just have to bake in the sun and get a tan, and you can find out instantly what group you belong to. Because normally a warmer toned person will turn a golden, honey brown in the sun or a darker chestnut color depending on their skin tone. while a cooler toned person will turn more red-ish or pink-ish, depending on their skin tone. So try laying out in the sun during the spring or Summertime, and really pay attention to what undertone you turn more into (brown or red-ish/pink) and you will find out instantly. Now with neutral people, this trick is a bit tricky. But it’s likely they might turn more golden brown and lean more toward the warm side — but it all depends.

Jewelry matters

Have you ever heard someone say that they only wear gold jewelry or that they only wear silver jewelry? Well, that’s because they’re basing that off of their undertone. Typically, warmer skinned girls go more toward gold jewelry because it makes them look more radiant, and glowing. While cooler toned girls look better in silver and platinum metals, because it gives them this icy, refreshed type of look. And as for neutral’s, they can rock just about any type of metals they want, since they have tones of both warm and cool, and it won’t clash against their skin, eyes or hair.

Find which colors look best on you

And finally, if it comes down to it, just try on a butch of clothes in your closet, or hold up a ton of colored fabric swatches to your face, to find your complimentary colors if you’re still baffled on what your undertone is. If yellows, oranges, browns, yellow-greens, ivorys, and warm reds all look good on you, then you’re warm. And if blues, greens, pinks, purples, blue-ish-greens, magentas, and true “blue-based” reds look good on you, then you’re cool-toned. And lastly, if you’re the in-between neutral, you can probably wear either or of these colors I just named. Each complimentary shade should highlight and flatter your complexion and shouldn’t go against it. Your true colors should pick up your natural colors from your undertones, eyes and hair and make a beautiful combination every time you wear that particular color!✨

And that concludes all of my tips on finding out if you’re cool, warm or neutral! I hope it gave you a basic idea on what undertone group you belong to, and what colors suit you better. Be sure to drop a comment on what color undertone you belong to, because I would love to know.

P.s: I’m a mix of neutral and warm.😉
